The cities of Wylie and Murphy are fortunate to find themselves in a position both economically and developmentally that allows them to not only meet the critical needs of their communities, but to focus on quality of life opportunities for each of their residents. The parks and recreation system is expanding with the recent opening of Founders Park and improvements to Community Park, both located in Wylie. This has allowed these communities to expand their summer music concert series, providing entertainment each Thursday night. Another program positively impacted by recent expansion is the Wylie Wave summer youth program, offering daytime recreation activities for children while encouraging physical fitness, promoting good citizenship, developing character and building self-esteem. Lastly, a very comprehensive senior adult program is growing in membership and improving in quality of service.
Community pride is evident everywhere, from clean city streets to warm hellos at the local store. Consequently, Wylie and Murphy residents benefit from a diverse program of annual and seasonal events. The Summer Concert Series at Olde City Park features entertainment for all walks of life. Stage shows may include comedic, magic or music acts from local artists showcasing their talent. The July Jubilee is a festive event filled with chili cook-offs, arts, crafts, games and rides. Finally, as the year comes to a close, the city of Wylie celebrates what locals call the Christmas-Tree-Lighting every December. Although it is cold, residents come out in droves to witness this majestic tradition.
These two towns are fortunate to be a part of outstanding school districts. Area students boast some of the highest SAT and ACT test scores in the entire state. Furthermore, state organized tests designed to measure the academic progress of elementary students are also looked upon fondly because local children seem to score above average year in and year out. When it comes to continuing education beyond high school, students have a plethora of higher learning institutions to choose from without having to travel far from home. The state of Texas and more notably, the downtown Dallas area and its surrounding communities are filled with major universities, community colleges and professional schools. This accessibility is invaluable to a young adult and is a major reason why living in this part of the state is so attractive. Not only do these colleges offer places to receive an education, but they also provide a source of entertainment.
Local universities such as Southern Methodist and the University of Texas are both within an earshot of Wylie and Murphy. These two schools are major players in college athletics and provide sporting events on the same level, and in some cases, on a higher level than many professional sporting events. The schools also have very popular performing arts centers where major acts from across the world perform on a regular basis. Needless to say, the arts centers also feature many shows with local flair and smaller productions from the college students themselves.
All in all, having such access to a big city is a major perk for Wylie and Murphy residents and the best part of everything is that when the excitement draws to a close and residents want to lay back and enjoy peace and quiet again, all they have to do is make the short drive back to their hometowns.
When staying and playing close to home becomes the option of choice, the cities of Wylie and Murphy combine to offer over 300 beautiful parks with wonderful amenities. Baseball diamonds, basketball and volleyball courts and large expansive grass areas for soccer and football allow enthusiasts enough space to emulate their favorite local sports stars on the field or the court. The parks also make having picnics and barbeques easier with covered pavilions, grills and pits. The parks are often a gathering place for residents of all ages and the locals’ sense of community often begins and ends in one of the areas many gorgeous park and recreation facilities.
While knowing a city’s history is important, the people of Wylie and Murphy are clearly focused on the future. Collin County is the fastest growing county in Texas. From educational excellence, to neighborhood development and beautification, to economic growth and increased occupational opportunities, Collin County with its family oriented communities of Wylie and Murphy is a fine place to make a fresh start.
